Curious & Playful Otters
As I paddle back in the coves and ponds off the Bay, I frequently encounter otters. Typically the first indication they’re nearby is a ripple in the water as they approach. Then, suddenly they pop up to take a good look! Whether a solitary otter or a family that is playing or fishing, their behavior is always the same. Their heads come up and after determining I’m not a threat, they bring their heads higher out of the water—they may chatter or whistle to each other. At times they’ve circled the kayak—they and I working to maintain a respectful distance. After their curiosity is satisfied, they dive and disappear and I move along my way.
